HE DID NOT KNOW where exactly Faranap was.

And he could not exactly ask the hotel concierge for directions to the Flesh Eater encampment, because that would make him look like a crazy person. So instead, he told her that he wanted to go on a long walk outside the city so please tell me where Faranap is so that I can avoid going in that direction thank you.

She happily obliged.

Coal did not know what he required for this ludicrous plan of his to work. He still had the gun from Fanaleese, and aside from that, he could not think of anything else he might need. There should be proper riding equipment to use somewhere within Faranap’s stable; and besides, every store in Soponunga was closed this time of night, so he couldn’t buy any even if he wanted to.

Using the gun would be an absolute last resort. No part of him wished to fatally harm anyone within Faranap’s walls. The Flesh Eaters captured and brought there might be rabid, or genuine criminals, but they also might be people put in impossible situations like himself. Or those who had simply wanted to honor their cultures’ ancient traditions and were punished severely for doing so.

No matter the case, he did not feel right hurting them.

Maybe he could knock one of them out if necessary (if he could even pull that much off), but he would prefer to avoid that too. He was unsure how many guards Faranap employed, or if there were any other surprises lurking.

Far too many unknowns for his liking.

By the time he finally set out, it was a little over an hour since he’d left the confectionary shop.

Soponunga’s nightlife had begun dying down an hour or two before, not nearly as vivacious as Vinnag’s. It was entering the early hours of the morning now, and it would take roughly an hour to walk to Faranap, which Coal hoped would be the perfect time to sneak in undetected and triumphantly ride a spider out.

He crossed the southern bridge out of the city and began to formulate a concrete plan in his head.

The first thing he needed to figure out was how he would even enter Faranap. From what he had learned since being marked as a Flesh Eater, each of the three prisons was surrounded by thick stone walls towering at least thirty feet high. Prisoners’ nails were filed down every few days, so that fact combined with the stone made it highly unlikely that anyone could scale the walls and escape.

But that also meant it would be difficult for him to get in. His own nails were long and hooked, but that helped him climb tree bark, not stone. And asking nicely at the front door was not an option.

Or is it? he asked himself. Would they just let me in and have a spider? What do they care?

He shook the naïve idea. It was his slight leftover inebriation talking. It should wear off by the time he got to Faranap.
